Dear Reader, Happy New Year! I’m wishing you everything you wish for yourself, and hoping we all close out 2026 in even better places than we’ve started it. Today I wanted to touch on a question that I get a lot of the time. “Is it still authentic if I swap ingredients?” Here’s something that took me a long time to learn… Authenticity in Caribbean cooking isn’t about rigid perfection. It’s about connection. For years, I carried this guilt around modernizing recipes. Every time I wanted to swap an ingredient or simplify a technique to fit my actual life, I’d freeze up. What if this isn’t “real” anymore? What if I’m disrespecting ‘tradition’? So I did what many of us do when fear takes over, I’d avoid cooking a dish if I couldn’t recreate all the steps. Easier to skip it than risk getting it “wrong,” right? Other times I’d go to the opposite extreme: forcing myself to follow every traditional step, even when it meant stress or exhaustion. Neither approach felt good. Here’s what finally clicked: Caribbean cuisine has ALWAYS evolved. Every generation has added what they had, what they learned, what life handed them. Tradition isn’t a museum piece, it’s a living, breathing thing that adapts because we adapt. You can uncover the perfect blend of tradition and modern techniques in my blog post “Traditional vs. Modern Caribbean Cooking: Who Wins?” Giving yourself permission to modernize isn’t betrayal. It’s belonging. Reader, if you’ve been stuck between honoring tradition and meeting your real-life needs (time limits, missing ingredients etc.), you’re not alone. And you’re not doing it wrong. In fact, I’ve pulled together a collection of Caribbean cookbooks that do exactly this. They honour our roots while giving you room to improvise, adapt, and make these dishes yours. Classic recipes. Modern takes. All the flavour, all the soul. Because your kitchen should feel like comfort, not a test.
