♥️ The real reason Granny’s cooking always tasted better (it’s not what you think)

Dear Reader,

Most people think that the secret to authentic Trini cooking is more ingredients, more technique, more precision.

In my experience? That’s exactly what gets in the way.

There’s that old adage that grandmothers don’t measure. They just know.

A pinch of this. A handful of that. Recipe card optional. No tutorial. And somehow, SOMEHOW, it always tasted like home.

Years ago, I stood in my kitchen trying to recreate a dish my Jamaican mother used to make from memory. One she learned from her grandmother, who I never met.

I wanted to surprise her with a taste of her “home”.

I measured everything. I followed modern “elevated” versions online. I added extra ingredients because surely more meant better, right?

The result was fine. But it wasn’t “it”.

I felt that quiet ache and disappointment so many of us feel, that disconnect from ancestral knowledge. Like I’d missed a secret class everyone else had attended.

The next time I tried to make it, I stopped and asked myself,

“Would a 1950’s Jamaican Granny be doing all this?”

That’s when it clicked.

Grandmothers weren’t just magic. They were CONFIDENT.

No second-guessing. No overcomplication. Just clarity about what a dish actually needed, and the sense to trust themselves enough to give it that.

So I simplified. I trusted my palate. I let the seasoning rest. I adjusted slowly instead of panicking.

And when I tasted it, something had shifted. It wasn’t perfect. But it was true.

[Sarina] has shown us that our beloved Trini cuisine can compete with the haute cuisines of the world, that we are a ‘glam’ gourmet brand in our own right. I think that TriniGourmet is doing pioneering work.”

You see Reader, simplicity, done with intention, is the highest form of mastery.

Authenticity in the kitchen doesn’t come from more steps, it comes from deeper understanding.

The kind of understanding that comes when you have the clarity, technique, and space to develop your own ‘sweet han’.

And the real kicker? While we’re busy measuring our cooking against that of our elders, the next generation is measuring theirs… against ours.

We’re becoming the benchmark... 👀

This is exactly where my “Flavour Sundays” come in.
